How is the work progressing?
The work is progressing well. Our contractor is working flat out
to reopen the bridge on Friday 2 December 2011.
Unfortunately, the bridge was in a worse condition and more
frail than anticipated. When we took up the timber decking and
exposed the cast iron cross girders we found substantial corrosion
and many more sections needing to be cut out and replaced than
predicted. 750 steelwork repairs have been completed, 40,000 litres
of paint and over 1,000 tonnes of grit used during the
restoration.

Works on the Bridge
The strengthening and refurbishment work on the bridge is
nearing completion, and the contractor is carrying out works to
finish the paintwork, footways and checking all the lightings.

Prior to the bridge re-opening we need to complete the
carriageway marking and Transport for London are preparing the
traffic signals and at Chelsea Embankment.
We have been working with the London Borough of Wandsworth and
they have rejuvenated pedestrian and cycle facilities along with
resurfacing that carriageway on Albert Bridge Road whilst the
bridge is closed to traffic.
